WASHINGTON, D.C. — America’s Community Bankers applauded the federal banking agencies today for agreeing to invite comments on use of the standardized approach by banks that will be required to use the Basel II risk-based capital requirements, and the agencies’ commitment to a timetable for Basel IA revisions.

“We are pleased that the regulatory agencies accepted the recommendation of the large banks and America’s Community Bankers to allow Basel II banks to use the standardized method of computing capital, as is the case in Europe, rather than the burden of the advanced approach,” said Diane Casey-Landry, ACB president and CEO.

“ACB also applauds the agencies’ acceptance of our suggestion to commit to seeking comment contemporaneously on revisions to the existing risk-based capital rules for the rest of the industry — the Basel IA revisions. This process, we believe, must result in community banks not being competitively disadvantaged vis-a-vis large banks subject to Basel II.”
